Twice a year the room does something bigger than a Friday night. The store funds every dollar of prizing out of the give-back half of the pledge, entry is a donation rather than a fee, and there are 24 seats. You don't buy your way in.
March, every year · Competitive · seat earned
The Player 5 Open
One day, 24 seats, every dollar of prizing paid by the store. Entry is a donation to that year's nonprofit, so what you play for is worth more than what you put in. Seats are earned over the year before it.
Fall, every year · New players · seat open
The Open Table
No points, no qualifying. Every player brings somebody who has never played, and the store covers their deck, their teaching and their prizing. If the Open is what you earn, this is what you do with it.
How you earn a seat at the Open.
Points run on the calendar year and reset on 1 January, which leaves ten weeks to publish the standings and hand out the invitations before March. Every way of earning is posted below, and none of them require you to spend a dollar.
Points · calendar year| Action | Points | Cap |
|---|
| Play a main event | 1 | 2 per week |
|---|
| Round up at the counter | 1 | 15 per year |
|---|
| Match a deck in the Deck Drive | 3 | 5 per year |
|---|
| Judge or score an event you're not playing | 3 | — |
|---|
| Teach at Sunday learn-to-play | 4 | — |

| Bring someone who has never played | 4 | — |

Sixty is set so that giving outruns turning up. Play a main event every week and nothing else and you finish the year on 55. Play half as often but teach one Sunday a month and you finish on 68.

The four given seats are the point of the whole thing: anyone who earned a seat can hand one to somebody who didn't. Standings go up as they change, so nobody has to guess where they stand, and if more than sixteen of you clear 60 we add a flight rather than cut anyone.
